Murder on St Mark Place A Gaslight Mystery Victoria Thompson Books
In 1896 rather scandalous goings on are happening at the famous attraction 'Coney Island.' Young men and girls seem to forget their morals and let loose. While this will ruin a girl's reputation, it is cause for murder? Our midwife sleuth, Mrs. Sarah Brandt, and her police detective friend, Frank Molloy take it upon themselves to find out, in person, when it is brought to their attention that several young working girls that have been beaten to death, had the famous Coney Island in common.
This book is an excellent view into the values and times of the middle classes and upper classes in the late victorian period of New York City. It is a time when life was cream and denial for the upper crust, while the lower classes suffered crowding, inadequate working conditions and pay. In spite of all the human spirit continues to seek out a bit of happiness, even if it comes at a dire cost, as in the cases of the victims.
This book besides being a great murder mystery, makes you think about life even today.

Murder on St Mark Place A Gaslight Mystery Victoria Thompson Books Reviews
Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy reunite for another exciting installment of the Gaslight Series. Sarah is a midwife who is summoned to St. Mark's Place in Little Germany of New York City for an impending childbirth. There she finds the expectant mother in hysterics mourning the loss of her sister who was just found brutally murdered. Because of her good heart, Sarah single-handedly attempts to find the killer. She discovered the hard way that the police are useless, when her own husband was murdered three years prior. Through her amateurish investigations, she learns that life for the young victim and other shop girls is harsh. They work long hours for a few dollars a week. Their only amusement is dance halls where the girls meet strange men who give them pretty things for "certain favors". As this is only the second installment, I noticed that Sarah's detective work is still a little unsophisticated unlike in the later books where she was more savvy. She manages to convince Frank to help her find justice for the victim. Frank agrees because he realizes the case reminded him of a cold case he barely worked on years prior. He also is becoming more intrigued by Sarah.
The heart of the story is very somber detailing the uncertain futures of immigrants, lack of women's rights, and abuse of women. However, the story was punctuated with a light-hearted outing at Coney Island by Frank and Sarah. Their attempt to ride on the amusements rides was hilarious! The mystery appeared to be predictable in the beginning, but It sure wasn't by the time the story ended. As with the other books in the series, the book is easy to read and highly entertaining. I have not yet been disappointed by this series!
(3.5 stars) The second book in the Gaslight Mystery series has Sarah visiting a family in the German immigrant section of New York. She is surprised to find that the sister of Agnes, the woman she is taking care of, has been brutally murdered in an alley. The family is disgraced by her behavior as a "good time" girl, spending her evenings in dance halls. The family is too poor to pay the police to investigate, so Sarah takes it upon herself to try to get the police officer, Malloy involved. On visiting his home, she realizes that his son is deaf and talks to Malloy about getting him evaluated. Malloy reluctantly looks into the case and finds out that there have been several other similar murders of young women. Sarah works from the inside, befriending some of the murdered girls friends to see if she can help find some suspects while Malloy does his own investigating. Sarah convinces him to go to Coney Island, and there they find some significant clues. While I figured out the murderer fairly early on, the story was well done and the characters have some nice development. The relatioship between Malloy and Sarah is interesting, as is the repairing relationship with her wealthy family. The author adds nice historical detail and this is definitely a cut above the typical cozy mystery.
Sarah Brandt is a widow who has made a place for herself as a midwife serving the poor. She is committed to the poor, but also is driven by a need to see justice done. So when the younger sister of one of the mothers she cares for is found brutally beaten to death, she calls on policeman whom she has helped and seeks assistance. When he discovers that there have been other similar murders of poor young women, he agrees to help.
This is a fine mystery with many strengths. The description of life in the tenements is captivating, as is that of the rich set, including the family she has rejected. Her characters continue to develop, and the other people of New York provide fascinating peeks into life in the City. The plot, like those of the previous books, is intense and engrossing. These are fine reads give them a shot.
Solid world building and character development.
I really feel totally immersed in turn of the century New York city.
This follows the original book in the series with the same main characters and inter-personal tensions.
We have the challenge of a woman who will not adhere to the mores that her society uses to restrict women. She is tough, independent, and bright.
Her police officer companion wants to do "right", but feels trapped by the reality of the NYC police department. To get ahead and make decent money, a police officer must take bribes and only takes time to work on cases that pay. The down and out are without recourse.
We watch them each develop how they see and deal with their world.
Adding to the excitement is the office's son, who appears to be feeble minded. The officer's mother takes care of him. They are why he needs to advance and make as much money as he can.
