The Dark Between the Stars The Saga of Shadows Book One Kevin J Anderson 9780765332998 Books

This is the first book of of The Saga of Shadows, a "space opera" about how the Spiral Arm's flourishing peace is coming to an end. It's split into about 150 chapters, each told from one of about 10 different character's point of view. These threads interweave throughout, creating potential for a rich narrative with many interesting interactions.

Unfortunately, almost all the characters are either boring or unrealistic. For instance, there is the head of a huge and successful medical research station who apparently has no medical, administrative, or political skills, and who has only one friend (who also has none of those skills). There are several "Roemers", kind of like space nomads, but almost all of them run together as plucky good-hearted entrepreneurs who don't like politics and are great engineers. Basically all the rulers are also self-sacrificing noble leaders, concerned with the plight of their peoples. The few interesting characters are underdeveloped. For instance, there is a half-human half-Illidrian who has more of a utilitarian ends-justifies-the-means outlook, but he only merits a couple of paragraphs. I either ended hating the characters and hoping they'll die (e.g. one of the main characters is a serial killer who casually murders anyone in his way for basically no reason, and never introspects or shows any doubt about his actions), or just not caring about them (e.g. most of the "good" characters).

This book also has an "evil will win because good is dumb" vibe to it, where only the "bad" characters seem to think ahead or are capable of planning. (For instance, two non-good characters are both massively wealthy because they sell off natural resources they found in "secret" locations. No one bothers to trace these resources back to see where they come from.)

This is the first book of of The Saga of Shadows, but it feels like the continuation of a previous series (presumably Saga of Seven Suns). Many of the main characters are introduced by a few pages which summarize all their exploits and relationships, most of which seem more exciting than what they do in this book. The author seems to expect we will care about these characters because they are already good friends.

To summarize, I feel this book could appeal to readers who read the Saga of Seven Suns and want to spend more time with the characters. Also readers who want simple and easy-to-understand characters and plot may like this book.

The Dark Between the Stars The Saga of Shadows Book One Kevin J Anderson 9780765332998 Books Reviews

This is the first book in a new trilogy set in the seven suns universe. This is a very enjoyable series I recommend strongly, but read the seven sun's series first.
There are multiple plots that can at times, seem overwhelming. Readers with tenacious, voracious reading capacity, will find this book delightful. As a Space SciFi Novel; I find it a fairly clean read without the tedious smut and vulgarity of other crass works by other Authors. You can free fall into this book, and time will become irrelevant.
The man does it again! I've always loved sci-fi books and Anderson always delivers excitement, thrills, death, and crazy new aliens. LOVED LOVED LOVED Saga of the Seven Suns, and when I met the author at DragonCon in 2015, he sold me the sequel book (this one!). While I found it's easier to read it digitally, (hence buying the kindle version), it's a phenomenal read and so exciting to have a sequel to my favorite series!
A new trilogy from Kevin J Anderson, set in the Saga of Seven Suns saga. This new trilogy, Saga of Shadows, is an excellent first book in this series. Merging old characters with new, Anderson is simply gifted.
This was one of those books that I just couldn't stick with. I made it about halfway through before I put it down for good. I just didn't find anything unique enough about the story to continue. The characters have simple motivations and aren't terribly well developed, in my opinion.
Richly diverse, this is science fiction at its best. The Dark Between the Stars is an intergalactic epic involving a wide range of creatures with rich and varied history. There is trouble brewing at Iswanda Industries. It begins with the revelation that big business won't listen to a report about the instability of their investment planet. Garrison, a worker there, escapes with his young son leaving his power hungry wife. His action of kidnapping his son reveals the gaping differences between his wife and his own background. The books jumps from species to species, the plot thickens revealing a background of conflict between humans and aliens. The opposing forces realize they must put their enmity aside to battle an enigmatic new enemy. Anderson builds credible world, filled with imaginative but believable beings. Fascinating and lush,it was a joy to read.
my initial experience with the works of kevin anderson was the Saga of Seven Suns. i was utterly hooked from then on out reading all seven works in that series. there are few authors that write intelligent, captivating works of science fiction. even fewer that are able to do that for an entire series. then you have the rarefied air that the likes of Heinlein, Le Guin, Herbert, Clarke, Bradbury, K.S. Robinson,..this is where i believe Anderson belongs now.

the Saga of Seven Suns was flat out amazing. i thought the series was done after finishing BUT oh no he has gone and done it again! Wow! as with the Saga of Seven Suns there is so much going on you need read a third or half of the first book to get a handle on the half dozen concurrent story lines and numerous characters. after that point it is simply one page after another of plot twists, surprises and some old friends from the first series mixed in to add even more reasons to keep reading.

while you can absolutely read this work by itself i do highly recommend reading the saga of shadows first. then move on to this series which begins where the Saga of Seven Suns left off.

fyi only but one typo, the author meant to write "grasp" the publisher likely used spell check and instead put in the word "gasp." i only noticed that as i read every word, not wanting to skipping anything.

fyi the precursor series is here on , Hidden Empire The Saga of Seven Suns - Book 1
