This excellent book by Isabella Alden, while it is not a part of the Esher Ried series, is actually a sequel to the book Ester Ried Yet Speaking. It continues to follow the characters of Dr Everett, Hester Mason, Joy Saunders, Joy Saunder's mother, and to a lesser degree, Professor Ellis. It is very well written. And though it was written over 100 years ago, it is applicable to the world today. The author is able to get into the minds of all the characters, both good and bad, and describe in detail what they are thinking. You may see a little of yourself in each of them. Another nice thing about this old book is that it has no typos. Many of the classics on Amazon are OCR scans of old books that are no longer under copyright laws. Many people sell them here with little or no editing. Thorough editing is totally necessary. If you ever worked with OCR software you know what I'm talking about. It is a credit to Ms Berlin for making available quality edited products, like this one, for such a low price. One caveat, though: If you read one of Isabella Alden's books, and like it, you could get hooked.Product details

Isabella Alden is truly one of my favorite authors. This story was so encouraging. It was such a good reminder on how each one of us plays a significant part in God's story of redemption!
Have been enjoying Alden's books, and this one was great.
I wish everyone could reconsider the values in this story

Another pretty good novel of Mrs. Alden's. As a missionary whose main gifting is "showing mercy," I could identify.
A rainy autumn night... I turned the final page and sighed, as I so often do, " Why did it have to end?!?" A few familiar characters surfaced surprisingly in this wonderful urban tale of young men and women tested and tried in many ways. I have learned so many things reading Isabella Alden's heartfelt books--in this one, mainly the virtue of persistent fight when circumstances appear to be stacked up against the work of a Christian. I was delighted to bump into Mrs. Roberts (Flossie from the Chautauqua girls) again and a few more cameos. I never want to come to the end of these inspiring books. The Bible verses in this one were so well-chosen and compelling; they always challenge me to rethink what I "know" about them. Christians who struggle with witnessing in public situations or with friends will especially appreciate this charmer.
