Four months following their separation at the end of the previous novel, Alex and Zeke meet up again. Zeke is a First, or vampire -- but don't call them that, and his kind are generally not friendly with humans. However, there's something between Alex and Zeke, a forbidden romantic interest perhaps, yet they continuously avoid the topic. Instead of discussing feelings, their meeting up causes Alex's group of humans and Zeke's clan of First to join forces a second time.

Forming an alliance versus Odin is seemingly a good move, one that enables the humans and First to continue seeking answers about the Chimeras and keep the dangerous creatures at bay. Their mission always comes first, and Chimera attacks can happen at random. Unexpected dangers cause Alex and Zeke's respective groups to face loss and hardship, but they understand that they must continue to move forward if they ever want to see an end to this battle versus Odin.

Sheer determination rewards them with knowledge of how Chimeras are made, which both answers old questions and gets the reader's gears turning with new ones... which I anticipate will be answered in The First War, the third novel in the First series. Can't wait to read it!

A great read. Again Fowle keeps the pages turning with twists and turns. I couldn't wait to start this book just to see what would become of Alex & Zeke. I was very hard to see some of the main people killed, but true to her no fluff writing it had to done. Couldn't wait to start the next book.
Continued from the The First Night..... How do you manage to move on with your mission when you lose your friends in a battle? Well, that's what Alex and Zeke were learning to do. Though they regretted not being able to save their friends, there was no time and they had to move on. Alex and Zeke got new members onto their respective teams. And the battle against the Chimeras continued.

They find what they are looking for - how the Chimeras are actually built. (That kinda gets me to sit up straight and read, not letting a word pass by). No, no - I am not letting out too much information - you must go read it. It's worth it.

M.S. Fowle surely does know how to keep her readers glued to the book. I couldn't stop until I finished both books at one go. I'd give this one a 4/5.
I really did enjoy reading this book by M.S Fowler. This series is the first time I read any of this authors books and I am so glad I was able to read them. I have told others about this series as well and will continue to suggest it to others. Thank you M. S Fowler, I will be on the search for more of your books as I am always looking for another book to read.
Book 2 is just as good as book 1... it keeps you engrossed in the story and you're hard pressed to put it down. Will definately read book 3 and see what it has in store
Like Ms. Fowle's other books, the premise of this story is good, and the characters are well-written, with understandable motivations. However, the thing that again kept it from being really fun for me was feeling I was being told the story, instead of living it. There's an excessive use of adverbs and other modifiers, and a couple of instances where the word usage itself was hard to decipher. Still, I liked it overall, and bought her other books, too.
...or maybe bad editing, but although the story line and characters are entertaining, the writing itself is agonizing to read. My initial reaction was that English was not the author's first language, or even second, but then the bio said she was born and raised in Maine, so there went that excuse. If it had been just a word here or there I would have put up with it. Unfortunately, the writer seems to have gotten the wrong definition into her head for dozens of words, and they are used repeatedly, causing much confusion. (The bread drove to work and squalled into the parking lot. The bread's co-worker squalled in next to her.) Some sentences I had to just give up on and keep plugging. I would love to re-read this series after it has been competently edited, because the characters and story were good, it's just the execution that falters.
